Museum Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site on the River Spree, and begins your East tour. As one has to discover, this island has five world recognized museums that present a particular manifestation of art and history. Go to the Pergamon Museum to see amazing collections of ancient artifacts or watch the famous bust of Nefertiti at the Neues Museum. Do not forget to visit each museum before hand as they have different opening hours.
2. Brandenburg Gate
If you don’t visit the Brandenburg Gate on a trip to Berlin, have you really been? The late 18th century monumental gate is an example of unity and peace. Go take a walk on Pariser Platz, the square in front of the gate, and get some pictures you will remember. If you’re visiting in December perhaps you’ll even get to enjoy the magical Christmas market that’s set up around the gate.
3. East Side Gallery
Art enthusiasts will have to add the East Side Gallery to their list of must see places. This is the longest open air gallery in the world, on a section of the Berlin Wall. When you walk along this historic site you will walk over 100 vibrant murals by artist from around the world. So each of these murals is telling a story, has a spirit of unity, and freedom, and that’s basically what Mural Day is all about. Read some of the history, have a look around and appreciate the artwork itself without feeling the need to plough through at a breakneck speed.
4. Checkpoint Charlie

Visit the Checkpoint Charlie Museum to immerse yourself in the history of this site. See the exhibitions then learn stories of people who risked their lives to cross the border.
5. Alexanderplatz
Alexanderplatz, or ‘Alex,’ is an open public square and a lively part of East Berlin. The Fernsehturm, Berlin’s TV tower, looms over the square, and gives one a panoramic view of the city. Go to the observation deck by taking elevator or go by stairs to encounter picturesque pictures. Both Alexanderplatz and parts of the open air market are shopping areas also, with numerous stores and departmental outlets. While you are here don’t forget to try some of the flavours of the local street food!
6. Tiergarten Park
Tiergarten Park will get you away from the urban hustle and bustle. This is a huge park, which is serene enough to escape to the city and it’s great for a slow amble or a picnic. You won’t be surprised if you see people jogging or cycling around in this popular spot for outdoor activities.
