Is East Berlin Still Communist?

by | Mar 7, 2024 | World War Tour Berlin

To answer the question of whether East Berlin is still communist it’s important to look at the historical context. East Germany was the communist controlled place of the Cold War, and East Berlin was the capital during that time.

Background of East Germany

After the Second World War, Germany was divided into two separate countries: Democratic state West Germany __ and socialist state, influenced by Soviet, East Germany. East Germany had its capital in East Berlin; West Germany maintained rule over West Berlin.

East Germany was part of the Eastern Bloc, a coalition of states that stood for socialism lead by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The country had followed Marxism-Leninism principles and the country was under direct effect of Soviet policies and ideologies.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall, that divided East Berlin from West Berlin came down in 1989. The Cold War had come to an end and this was an important moment in German history.

In 1990, East and West Germany were reunited. This brought an end to the communist government in East Germany and the commencement of a wide open national Germany.

Contemporary East Berlin

East Berlin has seen a huge change since the reunification of Germany. Like the rest of the country, the city has been growing fast economically and on population.

East Berlin no longer is under communist control today. Germany is a country with capitalism and is a democratic nation. Political, economic changes and social changes created a reunification that integrated East Berlin into a larger German picture.

Political Changes

When the country became reunified, the East German political system was dissolved and the territory passed into the democratic structure of the Federal Republic of Germany. The political system of east and west now are the same, with elected representatives serving along with a multi party system.

Economic Changes

After reunification, East Berlin has shown strong economic growth. Domestic and international investment has lured industries, businesses, and improved infrastructure to the city. East Berlin has been revitalized and made into modern commercial and residential areas in many areas.

Social Changes

The social changes in East Berlin have also occurred during the reunification process. People and cultures, ideas and lifestyles merged as the city came together with West Berlin. In all, the population of East Berlin has diversified and become more cosmopolitan — as has the rest of modern Germany.

Conclusion

In brief, East Berlin is no longer a communist state. The communist regime in East Germany was over when the Berlin Wall came down and Germany was reunited. And today, East Berlin has become democratic, it is capitalist, it has grown economically. Nowadays, the city is a very modern part of Germany, quite a contrast to when I was there and people lived much poorer lives.
